BACKGROUND
Born in 1875 as the first and only surviving child of Harald and Agnes Hougaard, Gertrud has become a prolific and successful author, only her work is published under a male/semi-anonymous pseudonym, G. Hansen, so while she earns her royalties, she gets none of the recognition, something that frustrates her greatly.
She grew up in Holstebro Parish in Western Jutland, where her father was the son and heir of the Hougaard Estate near the town. Her parents unsuccessfully tried to produce more children, but Gertrud remained an only child and was thus treated with extreme care, gentleness, understanding and freedom. What other girls were prohibited or discouraged from doing, she could freely pursue. In the same manner as when she refused to marry, her father accepted this decision and she has managed not to bind herself to any men since.
She is a closeted lesbian, although her father has his sneaking suspicions and shows only support.
At age 19, Gertrud was sent to Aarhus to study at university there, taking a literature degree, but only eleven months after her final exams five years later, when she had just accepted a job as teacher at the university, her mother suddenly died and she felt she had no choice but to return home to Holstebro and take care of her father who, although an important man, working as the region's hospital director, was also burdened by moodswings and depressive episodes. This meant leaving behind her girlfriend, Alberte, an artist and important cultural figure in Aarhus after a several year long relationship.
Gertrud moved back into her old quarters and began writing from there, sending her efforts to a publisher she had met in Aarhus who was eager to publish the material. At age 27, she published her first novel, and around the same time she met her current girlfriend, the school inspector's daughter, Mary, whom she fell almost immediately in love with and the two nurse a secret affair, both doing their best to stay unmarried for each other. Since then Gertrud has published another novel, as well as a small collection of essays. All as G. Hansen, the unknown, mysterious, progressive and provocative author from Western Jutland.
Now, age 30, she is tired of listening to people discuss her work in the streets, without them knowing who wrote that which they hate to love and love to hate. Although her publisher tries to persuade her not to, Gertrud is ready to publish her next novel in her own name. In her own right. And she is willing to fight for it.
